My best friend, Mori, wrote this for my yearbook write-up:

It's easy to love Jae once you "get" her. It's the getting her, however, that can take quite a while. How many people do you know walk around in impossibly-high studded pointy heels ("porn shoes", she calls them), trip and fall right in the middle of those fuchsia footbridges, and proceed to quote Milan Kundera by dramatically saying "people who keep on falling down just want to be picked up"? Welcome to Jae's universe: replete with offkey -- and sometimes off-lyric -- renditions of beerhouse favorites, heated debates over cheap beer about anything from the racist overtones of papaya soap commercials tothe best way to solve internal armed conflicts to who should win American Idol, unlawschool/ unconventional/ controversial tastes in men (brilliantbroodingsexyleftistbadboys only, please) and an offbeat but undeniable sex appeal that gets her exactly what she wants, when she wants it.

But to be truly inside Jae's universe takes more than knowing all these little quirky quirky details about her. It means allowing yourself to be rocked by the violent sway of her passion and activism, but reassured by the gentleness of her love and the unconditionality of her friendship. It means being intrigued (and sometimes infuriated) by her big-girl dramas, but inspired by her little-girl faith. It means first being challenged by the convolutions of her mind, and then eventually finding that it leads to the sacred spaces of her heart.
